2/25/2002 · A Christmas tree is a decorated tree, usually an evergreen conifer, such as a spruce, pine, or fir, or an artificial tree of similar appearance, associated with the celebration of Christmas, originating in Germany. The custom was developed in medieval Livonia (presentday Estonia and Latvia), and in early modern Germany where German Protestant Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. The Christmas tree was adopted in upperclass homes in 18thcentury Germany, where it was occasionally decorated with candles, which at the time was a comparatively expensive light source.Candles for the tree were glued with melted wax to a tree branch or attached by pins. Around 1890, candleholders were first used for Christmas candles.
